Posted - Feb 28 2005 : 11:26:05 AM Pat, Roj, and I had a very pleasant trip down the Middle White. The sun was shining at least half the trip and it was much less crowded (only one raft, and two other groups of kayakers) than our prevous ill-fated trip. This was only Pat’s and my 4.5 trip (Calling the put-in to Corskscrew ½ is generous) so it still feels like a new river to us. Not only a new river, but a fun quirky relatively short run that allows us to frolick and play and yet challenge us on occasion with a couple of interesting drops. When running a river I consider it a failure if I have to roll. In playboating, if I don’t roll a lot then I am obviously not trying. The reason is that there are rivers out there with sections that people have said ‘DO NOT FLIP HERE!!!, so I figure I need to be able to boat rivers consistently without ever flipping over. Unfortunately I didn’t make my goal Sunday. I ended up needed to roll Sunday when I didn’t pay attention and got caught up in an eddy between a rock and a wall. I look forward to going back to this section until I can run it in my Session with absolutely no flips (except those that occur while playing, there were lots and lots of rolls resulting from stern squirt attempts). Pat and I were really looking forward to revisiting a newly discovered restaurant in the Dallas (a historical Saloon with really great atmosphere and very tasty food), but were disappointed to find it is closed on Sunday. Good food was still found in a Mexican restaurant just down the street. It had the best salsa and fajita recipie that I have had in years.
