Water stargrass used to be rare in the Yakima. Now it has spread shore-to-shore, forming thick mats from Prosser to the Columbia. Stargrass causes several problems:
prevents salmon spawning
clogs residential and agricultural irrigation screens
limits recreation less fishing, boating and intertubing
silts in shallow areas and chokes sidechannels
displaces river flow
You can help. Please join a Saturday, July 31 volunteer work party to pull water stargrass out of our Yakima River. Invite your friends and neighbors to come too. For more information, see Benton Conservation Districts website:
Perhaps your river-lovivng group would like to schedule a private volunteer work party if so, please contact Rachel Little via this email or at phone number below.
Lets take back the Yakima River and keep Benton County a great place to live!
